Minister Azalina Othman, who is responsible for law in the Prime Minister’s office, supports the suggestion made by Deputy Prime Minister 1 Datuk Zahid Hamidi. She suggested the establishment of an Act for a fixed parliamentary term which would ensure political stability for the term.
Azalina pointed out that many countries already practice this arrangement, whereby a fixed timeframe for the parliament is agreed upon until the next general election. She added that this year her ministry will conduct an in-depth study and impact assessment on the possibility of the Act. The study will then be shared with the public and relevant parties for further deliberation before being presented to the cabinet.
She also emphasized that the proposed Act is not a result of desperation of the Unity Government, but rather is in line with the Prime Minister’s mandate for a stable political climate amid such geopolitical uncertainty sweeping the world today.
