In a move to facilitate the Hindu community’s celebrations during Thaipusam, the Penang Port Commission (SPPP) and Penang Port Sdn Bhd (Penang Port) will be providing free ferry services from midnight on January 24th to 2 a.m. on January 26th.

This marks the first time that the ferry service will operate 24 hours a day during this period. The initiative aimed to ease traffic congestion on the island, particularly for Hindu devotees participating in Thaipusam festivities.

According to a local news portal, the Minister of Transport, Anthony Loke expressed optimism that the extended ferry service hours would contribute to reducing traffic congestion. Upon arriving at the Raja Tun Uda Ferry Terminal, passengers will have access to complimentary Rapid Penang bus services.

“The buses will make stops at prayer locations, with the final destination being the Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Temple,” stated Loke during a press conference after the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding between the Railway Assets Corporation (RAC) and the Penang State Housing Board for the development of part of Lot Bandar Prai today.

Additionally, Loke highlighted that the free Rapid Penang bus services will operate from 2 p.m. to 1 a.m. on January 24th and from 5:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. the following day on January 25th.

He expressed hope that these efforts would encourage increased usage of public transportation, especially during festive seasons.
