In a strategic move toward fostering collaboration and resolving pending litigation, OPPO has announced a global patent cross-license agreement with Nokia. The agreement encompassed standard-essential patents in 5G and various cellular communication technologies.

As a result of this accord, both companies will amicably settle all ongoing legal disputes across jurisdictions. The specific terms of the agreement remain confidential, underscoring the mutual understanding between the two technology giants.

OPPO Chief Intellectual Property Officer, Feng Ying expressed satisfaction with the global patent cross-license agreement, emphasising its inclusion of cross-licensing for 5G standard-essential patents. Ying highlighted the accord as a testament to the mutual recognition and respect for each other’s intellectual property, setting the stage for potential future collaborations between OPPO and Nokia.

“We are pleased to have reached this global patent cross-license agreement with Nokia, which includes cross-licensing for 5G standard-essential patents. This agreement reflects the mutual recognition and respect for each other’s intellectual property and lays the foundation for future collaboration between OPPO and Nokia. OPPO continues to advocate for reasonable royalty fees and a long-term approach to intellectual property that supports the resolution of disputes through amicable negotiations and mutual respect for the value of all intellectual property.” Ying said.

Nokia Technologies President, Jenni Lukander echoed Ying’s sentiments, stating that the cross-license agreement reflects mutual respect for intellectual property and recognised Nokia’s substantial investments in research and development, as well as contributions to open standards.

Lukander expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with OPPO to bring further innovation to users worldwide, emphasising that such agreements contribute to the long-term financial stability of Nokia’s licensing business. “OPPO is one of the leading companies in the global smartphone market and we look forward to working together to bring further innovation to their users around the world. The new agreement – along with the other major smartphone agreements we have concluded over the past year – will provide long-term financial stability to our licensing business.” Lukander said.

As a significant holder of 5G standard-essential patents and a global leader in smart device innovation, OPPO stands out as both an innovator and implementer of technology standards.

The company has deployed 5G communication standard patents in over 40 countries and regions, boasting more than 5,900 patent families globally.

With over 3,300 5G standard patents declared to ETSI and over 11,000 standard documents submitted to 3GPP, OPPO ranks among the top companies globally in terms of 5G standard-essential patent strength.

This cross-license agreement with Nokia further solidifies OPPO’s position in the industry, fostering an environment of collaboration and innovation that is poised to shape the future of smart device technology.
