Global Chip Factory 2023 Revenue Reshuffles With Samsung Stepping Down And Intel Taking Top Spot

Samsung is no longer the world’s largest semiconductor chip company, according to the latest data from Counterpoint Research.

Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor chip division’s revenue fell from US$70.2 billion (approximately RM332.3 billion) in 2022 to US$43.4 billion (approximately RM205.4 billion) in 2023.

Due to the downturn in the memory chip and chip markets, annual growth fell sharply by 38%, indicating that Samsung was unable to win the hearts and minds of customers with advanced chip manufacturing processes.

In terms of revenue, TSMC’s revenue in 2023 will be US$69.3 billion (approximately RM328.1 billion), which should rank first among global semiconductor companies. However, most market research companies do not include wafer foundry companies in their semiconductor turnover rankings. Therefore, TSMC is not included in the rankings.

Intel’s revenue in 2023 has also declined, but not as much, and it can surpass Samsung in semiconductor chip revenue. Intel’s revenue will drop from US$59.8 billion (approximately RM283.1 billion) in 2022 to US$50.5 billion (approximately RM239 billion) in 2023, a decrease of 15%.

Nvidia is one of the only semiconductor chip companies in the world to see revenue growth due to the boom in artificial intelligence and increased demand for powerful GPUs in cloud servers. NVIDIA’s revenue will increase significantly by 86% in 2023, with revenue reaching US$30.3 billion (approximately RM143.4 billion), compared with US$16.3 billion (approximately RM77.1 billion) in 2022. Due to rapid growth, its ranking rose from 10th in 2022 to 3rd in 2023.

Qualcomm ranks fourth in 2023, with revenue of US$30.2 billion (approximately RM142.9 billion), a 17% decrease from US$36.3 billion (approximately RM171.8 billion) the previous year. Broadcom maintains fifth place with revenue of US$30 billion (approximately RM142 billion), an increase of 13% from 2022.

Samsung’s biggest competitor in the memory chip market, SK Hynix’s revenue was US$23.6 billion (approximately RM111.7 billion), a 33% drop from US$35 billion (approximately RM165.7 billion) in 2022.
