Today marks the second of a series of events to celebrate Hennessy X.O’s exceptional business leaders, continuing with none other than Choong Pin Hoong (pic).
Two years following Pin Hoong’s graduation in 2009 marked a pivotal period that steered him toward the entrepreneurial path. He became involved in his family’s business, Syarikat Letrik Chen Guan Sdn. Bhd., which specialises in mechanical and electrical contracting. Embracing the mantra, “One must have guts to invest in failures,” Pin Hoong embodies this philosophy, which is evident in his current role.
In an industry often perceived as ‘traditional,’ Choong has successfully blended both contemporary and traditional approaches, resulting in business growth and the discovery of new opportunities. The most significant challenge arose during the lockdowns, prompting Pin Hoong to make the tough decision of retaining the entire team on the payroll. Reflecting on this decision, he states, “Retaining the entire team posed a challenge, but we emerged stronger as a result.”

The inception of the Business Leaders Assembly stemmed from the recognising the need to enhance engagement within our (The Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor) youth community in the post-Covid era. Serving as a dynamic platform for exchanging knowledge, this assembly not only fosters camaraderie among council members and the youth of the chamber but also stands as a valuable avenue for forging meaningful connections.
Each session is carefully curated to feature a distinguished speaker addressing the contemporary challenges encountered by young entrepreneurs. The primary goal is to provide actionable insights, leaving attendees with tangible take-home messages and innovative ideas that can be promptly implemented within their companies.
During a recent session, Captain Arivananthan, a highly respected Master Mariner and acclaimed Design Thinking expert, certified by MIT and IDEO University was recognised for his notable achievements include receiving the prestigious PERDANA Award for his innovative approach to training through Simulation Based Learning.
