Malaysia Achieves Top Rankings In ITU IDI 2023

In the recent report from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Malaysia has solidified its position as a leader in telecommunication development worldwide. The 2023 Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Development Index (IDI 2023) showcased Malaysia’s remarkable achievement, scoring 94.5 points out of a total of 100. This score surpasses the global average of 72.8, positioning Malaysia at the forefront of telecommunication advancement.

Among the 10 indicators measured in the IDI 2023, Malaysia stood out for its near-universal coverage of 4G/LTE mobile networks, high mobile-broadband subscriptions, and affordable prices for mobile and fixed-broadband services. Additionally, the nation boasts high rates of Internet usage, mobile phone ownership, and Internet traffic per subscription, indicating robust access to digital services and widespread digital engagement among its populace.

Minister of Communications, Fahmi Fadzil, emphasised the government’s unwavering commitment to achieving Universal and Meaningful Connectivity for all Malaysians, with inclusivity as a primary driver. This commitment has been evident through the adoption of Garis Panduan Perancangan Infrastruktur Komunikasi (GPP-I) by state governments and the establishment of Jawatankuasa Penyeragaman Kos Caj dan Fi Pembangunan Infrastruktur Komunikasi, approved by Mesyuarat Menteri Besar dan Ketua Menteri (MBKM).

The collaborative efforts of various stakeholders have accelerated the deployment of digital infrastructure, particularly in rural and remote areas, addressing connectivity challenges. As of December 31, 2023, the 5G rollout in Malaysia has achieved an impressive 80.2% coverage in populated areas.

Moving forward, the government, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), remains committed to engaging all stakeholders and the Rakyat to ensure that Malaysia achieves universal and meaningful connectivity for all its citizens.
