Majority Of Public Supports Revival Of PLKN, Survey Shows

A recent survey conducted by Architects of Diversity (AOD) has revealed that over two-thirds of respondents are in favor of reinstating the National Service Training Programme (PLKN 3.0). Titled “PLKN 3.0: Public Opinion Survey,” the poll gathered opinions from 2,633 individuals aged 18 and above, with 67 percent expressing support for the revival of the program.

The survey indicated that 74 percent of respondents believe that the PLKN 3.0 would have a positive or very positive impact on society. Millennials, particularly those aged between 25 and 39, showed the highest level of optimism towards the National Service, with 78 percent rating it as having a positive effect.

When asked about potential priorities for the PLKN 3.0, 58 percent of respondents prioritized national unity. This was followed closely by youth development and patriotism, each receiving 56 percent, while military preparedness garnered 41 percent.

However, concerns regarding the program were also raised in the survey. Fifty-two percent of respondents expressed worry about sexual harassment towards participants, followed by bullying (49 percent) and politically biased content (41 percent).

In response to the findings, Ledang MP Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh highlighted patriotism as a crucial aspect that could be addressed through the PLKN. He emphasised the importance of enhancing the program’s modules to effectively instill national pride among the youth.

Former Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman had announced the abolition of the PLKN and National Civics Bureau programs in 2018 due to concerns about racial indoctrination. However, the current defense minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, announced plans for a cost-effective PLKN 3.0 to be implemented in three phases.

With 13 training centers identified for the program, including the Malaysian Police Training Center, preparations are underway to reintroduce the PLKN. Trainees will be selected based on their birth year, with only those born in 2007 eligible for participation, although deferral options will be available.

The results of the AOD survey closely align with ongoing discussions within the parliamentary special select committee for security, indicating strong public support for the revival of the PLKN with enhanced modules and measures to address concerns raised by the public
