Selangor’s public health and environment committee chairman, Jamaliah Jamaluddin, revealed that the state currently boasts 681 units of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. However, this falls short of the initial target of 1,000 units to be constructed by the end of the previous year. The Selangor government now aims to achieve this goal by the year 2025.

Jamaliah explained, “According to Selangor state government records, EV charging stations that have been built involving the government and the private sector are 681 units so far. The Selangor state government is encouraging the use of EVs with a target of providing 1,000 charging bays by 2025.”

Last July, the former state tourism, environment, green technology, and Orang Asli affairs committee caretaker chairman, Hee Loy Sian, had announced Selangor’s ambition to construct 1,000 E charging stations by the end of 2023 to promote the use of electric vehicles among the public.

To further incentivize EV adoption in Selangor, Jamaliah mentioned that the state government is in the final stages of discussions regarding incentives. Initiatives such as free parking schemes for hybrid and electric motorists, implemented by local councils like MBPJ since 2011, are already in place. Additionally, discussions are underway to spread the implementation of free parking schemes for EV users throughout the state.

The federal government’s commitment to EV adoption was highlighted through the announcement of the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint 2021-2030 in 2020. The blueprint aims to have 10,000 EV charging stations by 2025, with 9,000 units being AC chargers and 1,000 units being DC chargers.

As of December 31 last year, 2,020 charging stations have been installed across the country, with 1,591 units being AC type and the remaining 429 units being DC type. Notably, in 2023, the annual sales volume of new Battery EVs in Malaysia surged by over 400 per cent to 13,257 units compared to 3,127 units in 2022.
