James Dyson Launches 2024 International Student Design And Engineering Competition

The James Dyson Award, a prestigious international student design and engineering competition, is now open for entries, announced James Dyson Foundation, Founder and Chief Engineer, James Dyson.

The competition, running from March 6th to July 17th, invites engineering and design students as well as recent graduates to submit innovative inventions that address pressing real-world problems.

The James Dyson Award has a history of recognising groundbreaking designs with global impact.

Past winners include inventions such as an off-road ambulance trailer for conflict zones, a wearable biomedical device for glaucoma testing, and a device to control bleeding from stab wounds.

Established in 2005, the Award has supported over 400 young inventors with more than 5 million MYR in prize money.

Winners stand a chance to secure a portion of a global prize fund, with the International Winner and Sustainability Winner each receiving 176,000 MYR to support their next steps. Additionally, 29,300 MYR is offered to each National Winner in the 30 markets where the Award is run.

James Dyson expressed his enthusiasm for the Award, saying, “The world needs more problem-solvers, ready to take on the challenges of our time.

The James Dyson Award provides a platform for young inventors to showcase their medical and environmental innovations. I look forward to seeing what new inventions this year’s Award brings.”

The competition has a track record of propelling inventors to success, offering global media exposure and financial support.

One such success story is Lim Zi Suen, the 2023 National Winner for Malaysia, whose invention, Soapy, aims to educate children about proper handwashing techniques.

Zi Suen shared her experience, “The James Dyson Award has opened doors to connect with professionals, experts, and change-makers. Our society needs impactful solutions, and I believe design engineers can play a significant role in driving positive change.”

Entries will be evaluated by a panel of expert Dyson engineers, with the National Winners announced on September 11th, the global Top 20 shortlist on October 16th, and the Global Winners on November 13th. The Award continues to inspire young innovators to address critical global challenges with creativity and ingenuity.
