HK Passes Controversial National Security Bill

The Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region have passed the safeguarding national security bill on Tuesday. 

The bill which has been regarded as having strong influence from China is seen as a restrictive and borders on infringing the freedom of speech of Hong Kong citizens. The law which was proposed in 2020 stoked massive fear among Hong Kongers who eventually went to the streets to protest against the proposal, this led to the famous umbrella movement which eventually turned ugly.

Among the contents, the law prohibits and criminalises anything considered as secession, which is breaking away from China, subversion, which is undermining the power or authority of the central government, terrorism, which is violence or intimidation against people and collusion with external or foreign forces.
