Iskandar Investment – Cenergi SEA Forge Path Towards Net Zero Carbon CBD In Medini

Iskandar Investment Berhad (IIB), the master developer of Iskandar Puteri, underscores its unwavering commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.

This progress is marked by a landmark collaboration agreement with Cenergi SEA Berhad (Cenergi), a subsidiary of UEM Group Berhad, formalised during a document exchange ceremony attended by Dato’ Idzham Mohd Hashim, President/Chief Executive Officer of IIB and Hairol Azizi Tajudin, Cenergi Group CEO.

This strategic collaboration marks a significant step forward in IIB’s plan to establish the region’s first net zero carbon Central Business District (CBD) centring on digitalisation, innovation and global business services (GBS) in Medini.

Cenergi, a leader in the clean energy sector, brings a wealth of expertise across the entire spectrum of sustainable solutions. Their award-winning business model encompasses three key areas: Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency, and New Ventures.

Dato’ Idzham Mohd Hashim, President/Chief Executive Officer of IIB, said: “We are thrilled to join forces with Cenergi and leverage their extensive experience in sustainable energy solutions.  This collaboration, coupled with the collective efforts of our ten esteemed partners, signifies a pivotal moment in our journey towards achieving our net zero aspirations in Medini. By combining our expertise, we are confident in making significant progress towards establishing the first net zero carbon CBD centering on digital, innovation and GBS. This is a crucial step towards a cleaner, greener future, and we are committed to realising this vision for the benefit of generations to come.”

The objective of the collaboration aims to bring together the strengths of both IIB and Cenergi to work on various renewable energy (RE) exploration initiatives.

This includes exploring using Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to achieve IIB’s immediate sustainability goals.  By combining IIB’s development expertise with Cenergi’s deep knowledge of renewable energy solutions, the partnership will accelerate the creation of Medini’s Net Zero Carbon CBD.

A key target is to achieve 50% renewable energy consumption support by 2030 across all of IIB’s assets. This ambitious goal will be pursued through a two-pronged approach:

Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) activities:

The collaboration will begin by exploring the purchase of approximately 4,000 RECs to offset IIB’s current carbon emissions.

In parallel, Cenergi will provide technical support to IIB to develop its own RECs through future renewable energy projects. This initiative will enable IIB to not only reduce its carbon footprint but also generate tradable instruments that support the growth of the clean energy market.

IIB’s roadmap to net zero extends beyond renewable energy, encompassing five strategic pillars that represent the core focus areas of IIB’s key ESG initiatives: Energy, Waste, Water, Green Building, and Sustainable Mobility.  These pillars represent the core focus areas of IIB’s key ESG initiatives. This initiative complements the previously announced partnership with seven electric vehicles (EV) industry players, further solidifying IIB’s dedication to establishing a comprehensive sustainable ecosystem within Medini, Iskandar Puteri.

Cenergi boasts a comprehensive range of capabilities, encompassing design, construction, technical expertise, financing options, and operational support.  Furthermore, their involvement in Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) aligns with IIB’s pursuit of sustainable solutions.

Dato’ Idzham Mohd Hashim, President/Chief Executive Officer of IIB, added: “IIB remains firmly committed to achieving our sustainability goals and this collaboration with Cenergi represents a significant step forward in realising these objectives. We are proud to be leading the charge towards a sustainable future in the region, demonstrating strong leadership in environmental stewardship for future generations.”

“At IIB, we are aware and acknowledge that achieving net zero carbon emissions requires a concerted effort from all segments of society, and this collaborative approach will be instrumental in realising our long-term vision. We are determined to win as we step into this unknown territory, but certainly not without our current and future strategic partners.  With the immense challenges ahead, IIB welcomes strategic collaborations and engagement with all stakeholders including government agencies, local authorities, financial institutions, global organisations, private institutions, strategic partners, academic experts, and scientists alike,” Dato’ Idzham said.

Hairol Azizi Tajudin, Cenergi Group CEO said, “Our collaboration with IIB encompasses two primary objectives: providing Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to bolster IIB’s green initiatives and supplying solar energy to power the Medini Net Zero Carbon Central Business District (NZCC) and IIB’s RE: Zone, in alignment with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR). Through this partnership, we aim to support IIB’s commitment to sustainability and contribute to the development of renewable energy infrastructure in the region.”

Cenergi joins other industry players including Maybank, Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC), Nano Malaysia Bhd, Handal Indah Sdn Bhd, Handal Green Mobility Sdn Bhd, Kumpool Sdn Bhd, Yinson Green Technologies (M) Sdn Bhd, GO TO U (M) Sdn Bhd, and UN Global Compact Network Malaysia and Brunei (UNGCMYB), to collaborate with IIB in the journey towards net zero carbon CBD.
