Taylor’s University Launches Groundbreaking Bachelor Of Pharmaceutical Science Programme

In response to the growing importance and potential of the pharmaceutical sector, Taylor’s University has announced the introduction of the Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science (Honours) programme. This groundbreaking programme, offered by the School of Pharmacy at Taylor’s University, combines academic excellence with practical experience to prepare students for success in the pharmaceutical industry.

One of the key features of the programme is the incorporation of Work-Based Learning (WBL) mode, allowing students to gain real-world experience in pharmaceutical settings during their final year of study. This hands-on approach gives students a competitive edge and prepares them for a smooth transition into the job market upon graduation.

Additionally, the programme offers a unique extension in Cosmetic Science, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of cosmetics, including the science behind them, global market insights, and regulatory practices. This extension aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in the cosmetics industry.

Dr Wong Jia Woei, Programme Director of the Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science (Honours), highlighted the flexibility of the programme, allowing students to choose between conventional three-year study or WBL modes based on their career aspirations.

The curriculum also includes complementary study options such as Drug Discovery & Development and Cosmetic Science, supported by state-of-the-art laboratories on campus.

The programme offers students the opportunity to engage with industry partners through Taylor’s innovative Work-Based Learning experience and Pharmaceutical Industry Student Adoption (PISA) programme.

Internship placements with leading companies, including multinational pharmaceutical organizations, further enhance students’ practical experience and industry exposure.

Recognising the interdisciplinary nature of the pharmaceutical industry, the curriculum also covers business aspects, preparing students for a wide range of career opportunities beyond traditional laboratory roles.

Taylor’s Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, Executive Dean, Professor Dr P.T. Thomas praised the university’s initiative in introducing the innovative programme to meet industry demands.

“Currently, most of Malaysia’s pharmaceuticals and cosmetics are imported and it is therefore crucial that we expand the capabilities of our local manufacturers and industries to gain a greater share of this market sector. This is not just in the business sense but also in terms of being less dependent on other countries.

Our Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science (Honours) programme steps in to represent a significant milestone in Malaysia’s pharmaceutical education landscape. By combining academic excellence and world-class facilities with industry immersion, we are shaping future leaders who will drive innovation in the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors.” he said.

He emphasised the importance of expanding local capabilities in pharmaceutical manufacturing to capitalise on the sector’s exponential growth.
