Bank Negara Warns Banks After Recent System Outage

Bank Negara Malaysia has called on banks that had system outage, namely Maybank had major issues across its services including the MAE ewallet.

The Central Bank today issued a statement saying that it takes a serious view of the recent banking services outages the two of the largest banking institutions which have caused disruptions and inconvenience to customers. BNM said the banks have been instructed to ensure appropriate communication with affected customers. This includes promptly attending to any complaints and inquiries resulting from the outage and providing timely updates on services that were affected.

BNM has required the banks to provide a full explanation of the root cause leading to the incidents, as well as corrective and preventive measure undertaken to avoid a recurrence of similar issues.

The regulator also warned that it will not hesitate to take further supervisory actions where banks have fallen short of the regulatory and supervisory expectations.

Many Maybank customers were fuming when online payment services suddenly went down. They posted complaints on social media that they could not load the Maybank2u app nor make payments with it.

Some users ended up “trapped” in various shops, as they were not able to pay for their purchases.

Others reported being stuck trying to exit shopping mall parking lots, as payments could not be made at the parking boom gate.

Many expressed unhappiness that the system failed to function just as they were busy preparing and making purchases for Hari Raya.
