Sunway Students Embark On Satellite Building Challenge With NASA Veteran Sam Gemar

Students from Sunway International Schools (SIS) are gearing up for an extraordinary adventure into the realms of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) as they introduce the Cubesat Challenge to Malaysia for the first time.

In collaboration with Starlight Education, SIS has been selected as the pioneer Malaysian school to host this groundbreaking camp, offering students an unparalleled opportunity to simulate a satellite mission from inception to launch.

Led by veteran NASA astronaut Charles D. “Sam” Gemar, along with a team of expert educators and industry professionals, students aged 13 to 17 will delve into the complexities of building miniature satellites.

Scheduled for September 28 and 29, 2024, this brain-stimulating educational experience is open to secondary students nationwide.

SIS Principal, Richard Cherry expressed his pride in hosting the Cubesat Challenge, emphasizing its alignment with SIS’s vision to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators. Gemar echoed this sentiment, highlighting the program’s goal to ignite curiosity and cultivate a passion for STEM among participants.

In addition to the Cubesat Challenge, younger space enthusiasts aged nine to 12 can participate in the Galactic Explorers program. This two-day event, happening on October 5 and 6, 2024, aims to equip students with STEM skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities while incorporating Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

With Gemar’s expertise and mentorship, participants will engage in activities such as three-dimensional (3D) design, coding, and rapid prototyping, culminating in the creation of rockets and parachute mechanisms.
