Malaysia Implements Special Program To Address Rice Supply Shortages

A significant amount of local white rice (BPT) has been distributed as part of the Special Program for Local White Rice, aimed at addressing the issue of rice supply shortages in the market.

The Farmers Organisation Board (LPP) revealed in a statement yesterday that a total of 519.36 metric tonne of BPT have been distributed through the collaborative efforts of State Farmers Organisations and Potential Area Farmers Organizations across Malaysia.

This distribution involved 103 Farmers Organisations (PP) utilising various marketing outlets such as Farmers Outlets, PP Agrobazaar, and Farmers’ Shops to reach consumers.

According to the statement, in 2023 alone, the distribution of BPT reached 2,101 metric tonnes (210,100 cavans) with a purchase cost value amounting to RM5,357,550.

Additionally, the LPP announced the implementation of 34 Agro MADANI Sales (JAM) programs, with a total sales value of RM1,094,242 and savings of RM136,741 as of yesterday.

These programs are part of efforts to stimulate agricultural sales and support entrepreneurs. Looking ahead, the LPP aims to implement 78 sales programs throughout the year.

In 2023, a total of 114 JAM programs were executed, generating sales worth RM2,150,000 and achieving savings of RM470,000. These programs involved 954 entrepreneurs and attracted an estimated 250,000 visitors.

The distribution of BPT and the implementation of JAM programs reflect the ongoing efforts to bolster the agricultural sector and ensure food security in Malaysia.
