PETRA Initiates Water Service Transformation For Next Decade

The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) is taking decisive steps towards revolutionising water services over the next decade, announced through the National Water Services Commission (SPAN).

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof revealed that PETRA’s upcoming strategies include engaging stakeholders and collaborating with the Malaysian Water Association (MWA) to gather insights and feedback from all parties involved.

“Key considerations such as digitization and the integration of AI in the water industry will be pivotal in enhancing sustainability and operational efficiency,” Fadillah said during his address at the 36th Annual Dinner and Awards Night 2024 MWA, coinciding with the SPAN Industry Awards and ASIAWATER 2024 Awards ceremony.

Fadillah emphasised that restructuring the water service sector is a strategic priority, necessitating cooperation from stakeholders at all levels across Malaysia.

The event also saw recognition for outstanding contributions to the water industry, with congratulations extended to all winners of the MWA Malaysian Water Awards and the SPAN Industry Awards. Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir was also in attendance.

SPAN Chairman, Charles Santiago explained that the newly introduced awards aim to honor and acknowledge the exceptional achievements and best practices of industry players in driving the nation’s water sustainability agenda.

Echoing these sentiments, MWA President, Dr. Mohmad Asari Daud underscored the event’s role in facilitating networking opportunities and knowledge exchange, fostering discussions on current industry developments during the ASIAWATER event.

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of 12 awards to industry players for their remarkable achievements across various categories, including the Women’s Leadership Award, Best Public Operator Award 2023, Best Performance Service Award, Best Project Award, and Best Water Industry Innovation Award.
