Malakoff: Spurring Malaysia’s Renewable Energy Efforts At MMC Ports

Following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MMC Ports to undertake business exploration in various green power initiatives such as solar photovoltaic system, cold ironing or shore-to-ship power supply, and installation of electric vehicle charging stations, Malakoff Corporation Berhad (Malakoff) has successfully implemented the first phase of installing and operating solar power generation projects within Northport (Malaysia) Bhd. (Northport) and Johor Port Berhad (Johor Port).

The completed projects at Northport and Johor Port with the capacity of 2.4 megawatts peak (MWp) and 2.2 MWp respectively. This initiative has led to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions, avoiding as much as 1,890 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e) across both ports in 2023. Phase 2 of the projects will involve the installation of additional solar photovoltaic system with a capacity of 1.7 MWp at Northport and 1.3 MWp at Johor Port.

With this commendable achievement, Malakoff is poised to support the development of solar projects in the efforts to meet the 500 megawatts (MW) worth of solar energy within the Albukhary Group of Companies. Malakoff’s solar power generation projects are part of the company’s ‘Malakoff Green Solutions’ business pillar, which the company identified alongside ‘Malakoff Environmental Solutions’ and ‘Malakoff Energy’ following its rebranding exercise in 2023.

Northport

As part of an ongoing commitment to sustainability, active discussions are underway with two other ports within MMC portfolio, Tanjung Pelepas Sdn. Bhd. and Penang Port Sdn. Bhd.

Malakoff, renowned for its successful track record and technical prowess in power generation, particularly in solar energy, was entrusted by Johor Port with a sustainable task. By harnessing clean and renewable energy through solar panel installations, Johor Port aimed to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and minimize carbon emissions, aligning with its sustainability objectives. The direct use of solar-generated electricity to power various port operations further contributed to mitigating climate change.

Inspired by Johor Port’s positive experience, Northport set ambitious goals for its own solar project. Northport’s decision to engage Malakoff mirrored Johor Port’s approach, considering Malakoff’s proven expertise in designing, installing, and maintaining solar power systems. Positive testimonials from other clients and industry partners reinforced Malakoff’s reputation for quality workmanship and exceptional customer service. Both ports also considered Malakoff’s financial stability and solid business track record, ensuring long-term support and warranty fulfilment throughout the project lifecycle. The port management expressed strong admiration for Malakoff’s technical prowess in crafting tailor-made solar solutions that address their energy requirements and operational needs. Throughout the project’s duration, Malakoff maintained a high level of professionalism, ensuring timely project delivery. Furthermore, Malakoff’s competitive and transparent pricing structures aligned seamlessly with both ports budgetary and financial goals.

Malakoff has achieved remarkable progress in promoting sustainable green energy through its solar power projects, contributing to a more environmentally conscious future. This commitment aligns seamlessly with its brand’s purpose of ‘Enhancing Life, Enriching Communities.’
