China expressed its close attention to the recent shooting incident at a campaign rally of former U.S. President Donald Trump, a foreign ministry spokesperson said on Sunday. President Xi Jinping extended his sympathies to Trump, who sustained a gunshot wound to his right cheek, with the bullet grazing past his ear.
The relationship between China and Trump has been historically tense, particularly following the former President’s imposition of high tariffs on Chinese goods entering the United States. These trade policies have contributed to a strained bilateral relationship, which could face further challenges should Trump return to the White House.
Recent polls indicate that Trump, since the assassination attempt, is leading in the race for the presidency. If he secures another term, it could spell additional complications for U.S.-China relations, potentially leading to heightened economic and political tensions between the two largest economies in the world.
