Trade between Russia and Malaysia is nearing US$3.5 billion, with significant potential for further expansion, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In a statement reported by Kremlin.ru, Putin expressed optimism about enhancing ties with ASEAN as Malaysia prepares to take on the role of ASEAN chairman in 2025.
“We have focused on developing our relations with ASEAN, and it is well known that Malaysia is playing a leading role in the association,” he said.
Putin added, “Next year, Malaysia will preside over the organisation, and I expect that during your chairmanship, we will find new points of contact with this growing region of the world.”
His comments were made during a bilateral meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Wednesday, September 4.
This meeting is part of Anwar’s two-day working visit, during which he is scheduled to address the plenary session of the 9th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) later today.
