Alliance Bank Chairman Tan Sri Dato Ahmad Passes Away

Alliance Bank Malaysia Berhad announces that its chairman, Tan Sri Dato’ Ahmad bin Mohd Don, 77, had passed away on
September 17, 2024.

Tan Sri Dato’ Ahmad bin Mohd Don led the Alliance Bank group as Chairman since 1 February 2017, bringing with him a wealth of experience in banking, finance and professional accounting. He was instrumental in Alliance Bank’s transformation journey, emphasising on the inculcation of the Bank’s core values in everything it does.

“We are greatly saddened by Tan Sri Dato’ Ahmad’s passing on. He was a very well-known and wellrespected figure in the community and the banking and finance industry. He was also a Chairman of great wisdom and experience. He made a tremendous impact on the Bank, bringing about positive changes amidst challenges over the years to build a strong banking group in Malaysia. Our Board Members and Management Team were inspired by his leadership and Alliance Bank was privileged to have him at the helm as we embarked on a solid growth path,” said Alliance Bank Group CEO, Kellee Kam.

Tan Sri Dato’ Ahmad bin Mohd Don started his career with the Government of Malaysia as an accountant between 1972 and 1973 before joining the private sector. He worked in various capacities with Syarikat Jengka Sdn Bhd, Mansfield Berhad and Pernas Securities Sdn Bhd respectively before joining Permodalan Nasional Berhad, being involved in the planning and launching of the National Share Trust Scheme in 1981.

He joined Malayan Banking Berhad (“Maybank”) in 1982 and served as Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Director Officer of Maybank from 1991 to 1994. Subsequently, Tan Sri Dato’ Ahmad Don was appointed as the fifth Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia from May 1994 to August 1998. He was also the Chairman of the various Boards. He also held directorships on the Boards of J.P. Morgan Chase Bank Berhad, United Malacca Berhad and MAA Group Berhad.

Tan Sri Dato’ Ahmad was a Summa cum Laude graduate in Economic and Business at Aberystwyth University in the United Kingdom. He was also a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales as well as a Member of the Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
