Penang’s City Council Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) will increase the assessment tax rate by five percent based on building category with effect from 1 January 2025.
Mayor Dato’ Baderul Amin Abdul Hamid said the increase was based on the current assessed tax rate, which has been applied since 2020.
In addition, he said, a reassessment of the assessment tax rate was also made considering that the existing tax will expire on 31 December 2024 in addition to the increase in management costs in the Seberang Perai area.
However, he said the assessment tax change only involved 63 percent or 228,721 of the total 362,097 holdings in Seberang Perai, while the remaining 133,376 (37 percent) were not involved and remained at the current rate.
“The holding category that experienced a change in assessment tax only involved flat and landed residences, (excluding low cost and medium low cost) with 41,988 and 140,333 units respectively.
“Also involved are commercial holdings of 29,527 units, factories and light factories with 1,793 and 4,999 units respectively, gas stations (154 units) and development land of 9,927 units,” he said at a press conference near Menara MBSP here, recently. this.
Baderul Amin said that the approval to review the existing list of values as stipulated in the Local Government Act 1976 has been approved by the State Government involving both local authorities (PBT) namely MBSP and Penang City Council (MBPP).
“The implementation of the new assessment list from 2025 will involve the addition of new tax revenue to MBSP which will be used for the purpose of cleaning operations and solid waste disposal, as well as road maintenance.
