Tengku Zafrul To Issue Statement Over Speculations

The Minister Of International Trade and Investment,, Tengku Zafrul said that he will issue a statement on the hotly speculated reports that the senator will be leaving his current party UMNO and join the party led by his Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, PKR.

Local media had reported that Zafrul was displeased with his current party stating that it lacked leadership and direction, his position as the UMNO Selangor State Treasurer came to an end in April this year when he resigned. Notably, the former banker stood in the state during GE14 but failed to get elected, he however was roped into the cabinet through a senatorship whereby the term comes to an end in December this year.

UMNO Chief Zahid Hamidi said yesterday that he has not received any formal or verbal requests from Zafrul and had advised the component party members from pinching within the coalition.

The MITI Minister is evidently in a precarious position where his position in the government will be in jeopardy if the Prime Minister does not intervene of he does make his mark at a political party in preparation for the next election.

Zafrul was appointed as senator in 2020 then during the Muhyiddin administration as Finance Minister, he then resigned in November 2022 and came back in December 2022 as MITI Minister, prior joining the government he was the CEO Of CIMB Group Holdings.
