During the shortened week of Dec 23 to Dec 27 owing to the season holiday, Malaysian stock exchange’s benchmark KLCI recorded a cumulative gain of 36.73 points, or 2.31%, after four days of trading to reach 1,628.14 points, Friday-to-Friday. The key index went through four consecutive days of rally and gained strong momentum towards the end of the week.
On Monday, the key index rose 4.79 points to 1,596.20 points, from last Friday’s close of 1,591.41 points. On the holiday eve, the index moved up by 6.79 points to rest above the 1600-point threshold. After Wednesday’s closure, the market came back strong, advancing 10.71 points on Thursday. On the last day of the trading week, the key index gained 14.44 points to end at 1,628.14 points.
During the week, the benchmark index surged to the week’s high of 1,632.63 points on Friday and dipped to the week’s low of 1,592.57 points on Monday.
Concerning sectoral indices, four exchange-maintained indices rallied by more than 2.00% this week, including the Technology Index (up 2.65%), the Industrial Products & Services Index (up 2.59%), the Energy Index (up 2.55%), and the Utilities Index (up 2.23%).
Notably, the FBM-derived US dollar-denominated palm oil index (FBMAPUSD) advanced 2.32%, ahead of the ringgit-denominated index (FBMAPMYR) which gained 1.45%, the non-capped index (FBMPALMOIL-NC) which increased 1.69%, and the plantation sector index itself which added 1.41%.
After four days of trading, the REIT Index was the only index that declined marginally by 0.09%. (REIT: Real Estate Investment Trust)
The Construction Index rose marginally by 0.22% after dropping sharply by 4.22 points, or 1.38%, to 301.05 points on Monday and rallied 4.51 points, or 1.50%, to 305.93 points on Friday, to be nearly at par with the level prior to Monday’s sharp decline at 305.27 points recorded last week. On Tuesday the index dipped 1.02 points, largely offset by the 1.39-point surge on Thursday.
Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) was the focal stock for the week following news of approved electricity tariff hike during RP4 (2025-2027) from Jul 1, 2025 onwards. At Friday’s closing, Tenaga’s shares traded at RM14.74, after surging 56 sen or 3.95%. The shares of Tenaga at one point rallied past the RM15.00-threshold to the intraday high of RM15.04. For the week, Tenaga gained 80 sen or 5.74% in share value.
Sime Darby Property Bhd rose ten sen during the week to RM1.61, from last Friday’s close of RM1.51, which reflected an increase of 6.67% in its share value.
Genting Malaysia Bhd gained 5.16% in stock value during the week, rising by 11 sen to close at RM2.24 at the end of the week. Meanwhile, Genting Bhd added 5.29% to its share price, rising 19 sen to end the week at RM3.78.
