Fragrant Tales As Told By Michael Edwards

The tales of pleasant scent are culminated in the Fragrances of the World, probably the largest guide to perfume classification that has ever existed, and widely regarded as the most accurate fragrance resource.

Founded by fragrance expert and author Michael Edwards in 1983, Fragrances of the World constantly evaluates, and cross-checks fragrance classification with perfume industrialists. Edwards travels the world to record fragrance history with independence and impartiality; with integrity and accuracy. Together with his dedicated team of fragrance evaluators, Edwards seeks simple solutions to complex challenges through the platform.

Edwards’ Fragrance Wheel has been developed by the pioneer himself to explain the relationship of different fragrance families, and has become a universal icon of perfume classification. Developed to help industrial experts and consumers alike, Edwards’ Fragrance Wheel consists of a primary scent family (Woody notes, Floral notes, Ambery notes, and Fresh notes) subdivided into 14 secondary or sub-note families that include fruity, green, water, citrus, aromatic, soft floral, woody amber and so forth.

Edwards’ annual reference, Fragrances of the World guide, started in 1983 as a simple guide listing just 323 fragrances. Today, it has become the industry’s most comprehensive classification of fragrances, universally renowned as the fragrance ‘bible’. It makes finding a new fragrance an exciting journey rather than a difficult chore.

Edwards’ online database is the natural evolution of his revered Fragrances of the World reference guidebook, which began in 1984. The database is updated daily, meticulously maintained with new additions, discontinuations, formulation updates and changes in brand ownership. The web-based portal contains enhanced visualisation features, allowing users to view search results quickly and concisely. Utilising artificial intelligence (AI) technology and integrating Edwards’ proprietary algorithm, users can expect instant access to meaningful data both useful and practical.

Developing a unique classification system to match and recommend fragrances was the guiding philosophy behind Edwards’ work at its inception over 30 years ago. Now, with the help of computer technology and data science, matching and recommending fragrances to suit one’s preference has become more viable.

The “Match It” feature of the website, available free of charge (as at Dec 29, 2024), allows fragrance hobbyists and casual visitors to key in the signature perfume of major labels, such as ck by Calvin Klein and Flower by Kenzo, to get essential information on the fragrance featured by the perfume.

The digital tool has been hailed for organically creating sales opportunities and empowering the prospective shoppers with knowledge and expertise about their fragrance preferences!
