AWS Thailand Region To Add US$10 Billion To GDP And 11,000 Jobs

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has officially launched its new Asia Pacific (Thailand) Region, marking a significant milestone in its expansion across the region. AWS has committed to investing over US$5 billion in Thailand as part of its long-term strategy, with the construction and ongoing operation of this new AWS Region estimated to add approximately US$10 billion to the country’s GDP. It is expected to support over 11,000 full-time-equivalent jobs annually across various industries, including construction, maintenance, and engineering.

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed appreciation for AWS’s investment, highlighting its role in advancing Thailand’s digital transformation and promoting inclusivity in digital services for all citizens. AWS’s new Thailand Region, comprising three Availability Zones, will enable businesses and government entities to leverage cloud capabilities such as compute, storage, analytics, and machine learning with low latency and high availability.

Prasad Kalyanaraman, Vice President of Infrastructure Services at AWS, stated that the new region would support Thailand’s growing demand for cloud services and play a key role in accelerating the country’s position as a regional hub for artificial intelligence. AWS now operates 111 Availability Zones across 35 geographic regions, with plans for further expansion.

AWS customers in Thailand, including Bank of Ayudhya, Charoen Pokphand Group, and KASIKORN Business-Technology Group, are expected to benefit from enhanced cloud infrastructure, improved network response times, and stronger data security. These organisations, along with public sector bodies like the Big Data Institute and the Stock Exchange of Thailand, are already using AWS to drive digital transformation and enhance services.

In addition to infrastructure investments, AWS has made significant strides in upskilling the Thai workforce, having trained over 50,000 individuals in cloud skills since 2017. The company also launched several initiatives aimed at preparing students for in-demand cloud roles, including the AWS Academy, which currently operates in more than 30 Thai universities.

AWS’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in its efforts to optimise the energy efficiency of its data centres. The company aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, well ahead of the Paris Agreement. Through this new AWS Thailand Region, AWS continues to contribute to the country’s digital economy and sustainability goals.
