As Malaysia steps into 2025, the nation continues to solidify its international standing, showcasing its vital role as the Chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has been at the forefront, leading a series of high-profile visits by regional and global leaders over the past week.
Among the significant events was Anwar’s meeting with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong during the 11th Malaysia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat. The two leaders discussed mutual interests, reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, and formalised the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), which marks a transformative step in economic collaboration between the two nations.
Later in the week, Prime Minister Anwar hosted Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto for a closed-door discussion during a private lunch at Rumah Tangsi in Kuala Lumpur. Despite the brief nature of the visit, the leaders shared a candid exchange on key regional matters, with Prabowo expressing Indonesia’s full support for Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship.
Notably, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba also visited Malaysia, marking his first bilateral trip since assuming office. Malaysia was selected as the destination for his inaugural overseas visit, reflecting Japan’s recognition of the country’s strategic importance.
These meetings underscored the growing diplomatic strength of Malaysia as ASEAN Chair, with Anwar demonstrating leadership and fostering robust relationships with regional partners. Prof Dr Azizuddin Mohd Sani, an international affairs analyst, highlighted that Anwar’s ability to navigate complex regional and global challenges has bolstered Malaysia’s position on the international stage.
As ASEAN Chair, Malaysia’s agenda for 2025 centres on boosting intra-regional trade, driving economic growth, maintaining peace and security, and addressing the ongoing crisis in Myanmar. The upcoming ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat in Langkawi this weekend will officially kickstart a series of meetings throughout the year. Malaysia is set to host over 300 key events under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability.”
The visits, combined with Malaysia’s leadership in regional diplomacy, are a testament to the nation’s growing influence in shaping ASEAN’s future.
