Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has praised the strong Merdeka spirit shown by young Malaysians, rejecting perceptions that the younger generation no longer appreciates the country’s independence.
Reflecting on the Merdeka Parade in Putrajaya on Aug 31, Tun Mahathir said he was encouraged by the enthusiastic turnout and festive atmosphere surrounding the national celebration.
He noted that many young Malays, Chinese and Indians were among the spectators, with their enthusiasm showing that the meaning of independence continues to resonate across communities.
Tun Mahathir said the joy displayed by the young crowd reflected a genuine sense of patriotism and pride in the country.
“This kind of spirit will preserve the country,” he said, adding that there was nothing more honourable than defending the nation they love.
