The Election Commission (EC) is seeking public feedback on proposed changes to Sarawak’s electoral map, including the creation of 17 new state constituencies and the renaming of 10 state seats and one parliamentary constituency.
The proposals would increase the number of state constituencies from 82 to 99, subject to completion of the electoral review process.
The notice, displayed until Sept 30 at selected district offices across Sarawak and published in selected local dailies, allows members of the public to submit objections to the proposed boundary changes.
The 17 proposed new state seats are Jagoi, Pasir Pandak, Matang, Semarak, Tabuan Jaya, Maong, Samarindah, Sungai Serin, Igan, Tanah Mas, Sungai Merah, Bukit Kemuyang, Melekun, Batu Niah, Permaisuri, Tudan and Usun Apau.
The EC has also proposed renaming 10 state constituencies, including Opar to Serayan, Tasik Biru to Singai and Tarat to Bung Sadung. At the federal level, Igan is proposed to be renamed Batang Lassa.
The review follows the Sarawak Legislative Assembly’s passage of the State Legislative Assembly (Composition of Membership) Bill 2025, which provides for the increase in state seats.
Sarawak’s current state government mandate expires in February 2027.
