Domestic Tourism Hits Record RM107.2 Billion In 2024

Malaysia’s domestic tourism surged to RM107.2 billion in 2024, with the fourth quarter alone contributing RM29.0 billion, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).

Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin highlighted that 260.1 million domestic visitors were recorded throughout the year, reflecting a 21.7% increase compared to 2023. Domestic tourism expenditure also saw 26.3% growth year-on-year.

The tourism sector’s expansion was evident across related industries:

  • Zoo attractions revenue increased by 15.6%
  • Retail sales of automotive fuel rose by 6.7%
  • Domestic airport arrivals grew by 6.1%
  • Highway traffic volume increased by 3.8%
  • Accommodation sector revenue surged by 14.1%

Hotel occupancy rates reflected the demand for travel, with four-star hotels seeing a 5.9% increase, beach destinations rising by 12.1%, and town areas experiencing a modest 0.7% growth.

The Services sector expanded 6.2% in the fourth quarter, supported by Wholesale & Retail Trade and Food & Beverages. Land transport saw a 10.0% rise, while air transport increased by 9.3%, underscoring growing travel demand.

As Malaysia heads into a festive season, domestic tourism is expected to remain a key economic driver, reinforcing its role in the nation’s growth strategy.
