AirAsia has been recognised for its environmental leadership by securing a perfect score of 10 out of 10 in the aviation industry’s first comprehensive sustainability audit. This achievement places AirAsia among just 25 top-performing airlines out of 142 evaluated globally, highlighting its commitment to sustainable aviation.
The audit, conducted by 42kft.com, assessed airlines on nine criteria, including fleet modernisation, fuel efficiency innovations, carbon offsetting, and transparent sustainability reporting. AirAsia’s performance was praised by Geoffrey Thomas, CEO and Editor-in-Chief of 42kft.com, who called the airline “one of the global leaders in eco-conscious aviation.”
Yap Mun Ching, AirAsia’s Chief Sustainability Officer, acknowledged the recognition, noting the airline’s strategic approach to sustainability amid diverse regulatory frameworks and local challenges.
She noted, “This accolade validates the breadth of our sustainability efforts, acknowledging not just our achievements but also the unique challenges we navigate in our region. From adapting to diverse regulatory frameworks to balancing global standards with local realities, our approach has been both strategic and inclusive.”
She also highlighted AirAsia’s leadership in shaping sustainable aviation policy, including its role in Malaysia’s National Task Force on CORSIA and its involvement with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s working group.
The 42kft.com audit aligns with AirAsia’s 2024 Sustainability Report, which showcases the airline’s efforts to reduce its environmental footprint. Key achievements include record-low carbon emissions and operational innovations, such as the introduction of combo units at KLIA2 to reduce aircraft engine usage while parked, projected to cut 1% of AirAsia’s CO2 emissions.
The airline’s sustainability performance has also been recognised by global indices, with Capital A (AirAsia’s holding company) achieving notable scores in FTSE ESG Ratings and S&P Global CSA Score.
