Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa has confirmed that the comprehensive investigation into the Jalan Masjid India sinkhole which occurred on Aug 23, 2024, will be submitted to Cabinet no later than December this year.
The initial site collapse, which formed an eight-metre-deep hole and tragically led to the disappearance of an Indian national, prompted a multi-agency inquiry. Authorities employed advanced geotechnical techniques such as ground-penetrating radar and microgravity testing to assess underground stability and identify whether further vulnerable zones exist in the Central Business District.
Dr Zaliha emphasised that the report, now in its final review stage, will first be considered by Cabinet before any decision on public disclosure is made. The findings are expected to guide both immediate and long-term preventive measures, including detailed soil investigations, deep boring tests, and integrity audits of buried utilities.
The minister also reassured that preliminary task force assessments have confirmed the area is currently safe for pedestrian use, following safety improvements directed by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall and the Dang Wangi District Police Chief.
Community leaders, including Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye of the Alliance of Safety Community, have urged Parliament to debate the findings once Cabinet review is complete.
As Kuala Lumpur awaits the Cabinet’s review, local businesses and public stakeholders remain hopeful that the forthcoming report will enhance safety protocols and strengthen urban resilience efforts in the wake of the tragic incident.
