UEM Edgenta Bhd has commenced operations of its first Premix Plant with Recycling Facility in Chenderiang, Tapah, Perak. This marks a significant milestone in sustainable infrastructure development. The plant, developed through its subsidiary Edgenta PROPEL Bhd, aims to produce Recycled Asphalt Premix (RAP) as part of efforts to promote circular economy practices in road maintenance.
Operational since September 2024, the facility has a production capacity of 240 tonnes per hour and is equipped with advanced technology to incorporate recycled materials into asphalt mixtures. UEM Edgenta estimates the process could reduce carbon emissions by up to 15% compared with conventional asphalt production, while supporting the rehabilitation of more than 200 kilometres of pavement annually.
The initiative is aligned with Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap and Khazanah Nasional’s sustainability agenda, reflecting a shift toward environmentally responsible infrastructure solutions. The company said the facility enables reduced reliance on virgin raw materials and energy-efficient production methods, which consume less power per tonne.
Strategically located near the PLUS Highway, the plant offers logistical advantages for distributing RAP products to infrastructure and road projects across Perak and the central region, cutting transportation time and emissions. UEM Edgenta added that the plant is operated mainly by locally hired technicians and plant operators, creating employment and upskilling opportunities in the area.
The development also complements the company’s Pavement Research Centre initiatives, which focus on innovating sustainable premix products for broader industry use and potential regional expansion.
