The government confirmed that 61% of tariff lines under its new trade arrangement with the United States will carry zero tariffs, following discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral economic ties.
Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said during a press conference today that key sectors such as semiconductors and pharmaceuticals will remain at zero tariff, reinforcing Malaysia’s position as a critical hub in the global supply chain.
He also revealed that Malaysia will purchase Boeing aircraft worth US$9.5 billion as part of the broader trade collaboration.
Tengku Zafrul clarified that the agreement does not include any exclusivity on rare earth elements. “The US never asked for it, and Malaysia has no such commitment,” he said.
On agricultural imports, he stressed that halal meat from the US must continue to comply with JAKIM standards, including recognition of certifying organisations by the Malaysian halal authority.
A joint statement between Malaysia and the US on the trade deal is expected over the weekend.
