Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail revealed today that the preliminary investigation report from Bukit Aman has found elements of bullying and neglect in the tragic death of teenager Zara, a case that has drawn national outrage and grief.
Speaking to reporters, Saifuddin said the authorities are treating the matter with utmost seriousness and have already widened the scope of their investigation.
“Based on the initial findings, there are elements of bullying and neglect that cannot be ignored. The police are pursuing all possible angles to ensure accountability and justice for Zara,” he said.
The 15-year-old’s death has sparked widespread public concern over the safety and well-being of schoolchildren, particularly amid rising cases of bullying in educational and institutional settings.
Bukit Aman has reportedly mobilised a dedicated task force to investigate the case, focusing not only on the immediate circumstances surrounding Zara’s death but also on the systemic lapses that may have contributed to it. This includes examining the role of supervisors, peers, and the institutions involved.
The tragedy has ignited debate across social media and civil society groups, many of whom are demanding stronger anti-bullying measures and stricter oversight of institutions tasked with caring for minors. NGOs and parent associations have also called on the government to review existing protection frameworks to prevent similar cases in the future.
Saifuddin assured that the ministry will work closely with the police, education authorities, and child protection agencies to strengthen preventive measures and ensure accountability.
“This case is a painful reminder that bullying is not a minor issue but a matter of life and death. The government will not compromise when it comes to the safety of our children,” he stressed.
