Johor Specialist Hospital (JSH), part of KPJ Healthcare Bhd, has made history as the first hospital in Malaysia to deploy the Zeiss Kinevo 900 S Robotic Visualisation System, a breakthrough that elevates neurosurgical and spinal care in the country.
The advanced system supports procedures in neurosurgery, spinal surgery, and combined endoscopic microsurgery, offer surgeons enhanced precision and patients access to cutting-edge treatments. Recently, Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr Sharon Casilda Theophilus and her team successfully performed a minimally invasive brain tumour removal using the new system in tandem with a surgical navigation platform, achieving high accuracy in visualisation and instrument guidance.
According to Dr Sharon, the Zeiss Kinevo 900 S delivers shared 3D 4K imagery in real time, enabling surgical teams to work seamlessly while supporting training for young specialists.
“Its robotic-assisted features minimise manual adjustments, keeping surgeons focused during complex operations such as aneurysm repair, deep brain stimulation and spinal deformity correction.
“Together with Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr Ahmad Khan and our surgical team, we are bringing this system into practice to strengthen care in complex brain and spine procedures,” Dr Sharon said, while emphasising that this technological breakthrough provides a clear view and steady control in delicate surgeries, and it is a valuable platform for guiding and training the next generation of neurosurgeons.
Meanwhile, KPJ Healthcare President & Managing Director Chin Keat Chyuan said introducing this technology reflects the group’s commitment to “Care for Life” philosophy, as it not only enhances patient outcomes, it also fosters the next generation of medical specialists.
Chin emphasised that by integrating this system, JSH is reinforcing its role as a Centre of Excellence within the KPJ Health System, strengthening subspecialties and advancing clinical care, research and education.
