PLUS Malaysia Berhad said it allocated approximately RM37 million for public restroom refurbishment projects since 2023.
The highway concessionaire added that it is currently undertaking public restroom refurbishment projects at 56 locations across Rest and Service Areas (R&R), Lay-bys, Overhead Bridge Restaurants, and Toll Plazas along its operated highways. A total of 32 and 16 public restroom refurbishment locations were completed in 2023 and 2024. This year, restroom refurbishment projects are expected to be carried out in stages at 8 more locations.
According to PLUS Managing Director, Datuk Nik Airina Nik Jaffar, “Under the 5-Year Master
Plan for Development and Improvement of Facilities for R&R and lay-bys, several R&R and
lay-by locations on PLUS-operated highways have been identified for upgrades, aimed at
providing more comfortable facilities and enhancing service efficiency for highway users.
Under this plan, 5 R&R and 11 lay-bys are currently and will be upgraded in stages until 2028.
“At the same time, PLUS will upgrade selected R&R and lay-by locations in stages by
providing improved facilities in the future, including Pedas Linggi Lay-by (Northbound), Bukit
Gantang Lay-by (Southbound), Tangkak Lay-by (Northbound) and Machap R&R
(Southbound),” she added.
Restroom refurbishment projects are currently being carried out including Gurun R&R (Northbound), Gunung Semanggol R&R (Both Bounds), Dengkil R&R (Southbound), Ayer Keroh Overhead Bridge Restaurant (Both Bounds), Simpang Pulai Lay- by (Southbound), Sungai Perak R&R (Both Bounds), Seremban R&R (Northbound) and Ayer Keroh R&R (Northbound), Sungai Bakap Lay-by (Both Bounds), Rawang Lay-by (Southbound), Gua Tempurung Lay-by (Southbound) and Kulai Lay-by (Northbound). PLUS said most of the restrooms at these locations are refurbished and are ready for public use.
Several selected locations have been enhanced by increasing the number of seated toilets.
They are equipped with special cubicles for Persons with Disabilities (OKU), family and child
cubicles, baby changing rooms, and shower facilities.
For 2025, refurbishment projects are actively in progress at locations including Mambau R&R (Both Bounds), Pagoh R&R (Northbound), Yong Peng Lay-by (Northbound), Kulai Lay-by (Southbound), Kulai Toll Plaza, Sedenak Toll Plaza and Simpang Renggam Toll Plaza and the projects are expected to be completed by 2026.
