The Ministry of Human Resources (MOHR/KESUMA) has introduced the Gig Workers Bill 2025, aimed at extending legal rights and protection to workers in the arts, creative and cultural industries.
At a briefing session attended by nearly 100 creative practitioners, Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong explained that under the new law, hiring entities must make payment within seven days if no period is specified in contracts and are required to provide payslips upon request.
“The new law will end the denial of rights and justice for gig workers that has persisted throughout 100 years of the creative industry’s existence in Malaysia,” said Sim.
The session, held in collaboration with Persatuan Karyawan Malaysia, also allowed musicians, lyricists, composers, animators and other freelance workers to raise issues they commonly face.
KESUMA said the Bill is part of its wider effort to ensure gig workers in Malaysia receive fair treatment, while also supporting skills development programmes to strengthen career growth in the creative sector.
