Malaysia has formally finalised its participation in the Convention on the Registration of Objects Launched into Outer Space (REG 1975), a treaty under the United Nations (UN). The accession was completed on 26 September, according to a statement released today by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI).
MOSTI said Malaysia’s participation was submitted to the UN by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, representing the Government.
The ministry added that Mohamad personally presented the instrument of accession to UN Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and UN Legal Adviser Elinor Jane Britt Hammarskjold in an official ceremony at the UN Headquarters in New York.
The ministry noted that the step reinforces Malaysia’s role as a responsible player in the global space sector. It marks a significant commitment to space governance, particularly in registering space objects, ensuring the safety of satellite operations, and promoting transparency in exploration and the peaceful use of outer space.
The statement highlighted that Malaysia’s participation is a significant milestone that aligns with its adherence to the international legal framework under the UN.
It also supports the implementation of Malaysia’s national space objectives, including the Malaysian Space Policy and the Malaysian Space Authority Act 2022 (Act 834). These measures lay the foundation for the development and growth of Malaysia’s space sector.
With this accession, Malaysia is positioned to strengthen its role as a proactive and responsible player in space, consistent with the goals outlined in the National Space Policy 2030.
The commitment also reflects the broader principles of MADANI Malaysia, which focus on sustainability, well-being, and inclusive development, including within the rapidly evolving local space economy.
MOSTI expressed confidence that joining the convention will add value to efforts to expand the satellite industry, build investor confidence, and create new opportunities for collaboration in space technology research and innovation.
Malaysia also reaffirmed its intention to remain active in international space forums and cooperate with the global community to ensure outer space is used safely, peacefully, and sustainably for the benefit of all.
