BNPL Borrowing Hits RM4.9 Billion In 2025, Youth Make Up 40% Of Transactions

Total borrowing under the ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ (BNPL) scheme reached RM4.9 billion as of 31 December 2025, accounting for 0.3% of Malaysia’s overall household debt, Deputy Finance Minister Liew Chin Tong said.

In 2025, BNPL transactions surged to 243 million, valued at RM21.3 billion, marking increases of 66% in transaction volume and 78% in value compared with 2024, which saw 146 million transactions worth RM12 billion.

Liew noted that overdue BNPL loans remained under control, totalling RM160.2 million or 3.3% of total BNPL borrowing, reflecting manageable consumer debt levels.

Approximately 40% of BNPL transactions involved individuals aged 30 and below. The scheme is primarily used for food, groceries, transport, and services, with an average transaction value of RM91.

“Studies by the Consumer Credit Oversight Board Task Force show that more than 70% of active BNPL users come from the lower-income B40 group,” Liew added, emphasising the ministry’s ongoing monitoring of digital credit facilities to safeguard consumer interests.
