Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a two-day official visit to Malaysia on Feb 7-8, underscoring the countries’ deep-rooted friendship and reaffirming their commitment to the India-Malaysia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP).
During the visit, Prime Ministers Modi and Anwar Ibrahim held extensive bilateral talks covering political engagement, defence, trade and investment, digital economy, energy, agriculture, education, tourism, and regional and global developments.
The leaders also witnessed the signing and exchange of several bilateral agreements, including memoranda of understandings on semiconductors, healthcare, vocational training, disaster management, anti-corruption, social security and audiovisual co-production.
Economic cooperation featured prominently, with both sides emphasising enhanced trade facilitation, investment in infrastructure, renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, fintech, artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductor sectors.
They also highlighted the importance of the Malaysia-India Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement and the ongoing review of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement to strengthen bilateral trade.
In defence and security, the leaders welcomed the continued success of joint exercises, staff talks and maritime cooperation, including the Harimau Shakti military exercise and joint naval initiatives. They reaffirmed commitment to counterterrorism, transnational crime and multilateral security frameworks, including ASEAN-India cooperation.
People-to-people ties were also reinforced through initiatives in education, vocational training, tourism and cultural exchange, including the Thiruvalluvar Chair and Scholarships at Universiti Malaya. The leaders also highlighted digital and financial collaboration through the Malaysia-India Digital Council and bilateral payment linkages.
The visit concluded with mutual commitments to sustainable development, biodiversity conservation, clean energy and strengthened connectivity in the Indo-Pacific region.
Modi also extended an invitation to Anwar to visit India, highlighting the ongoing trajectory of cooperation between the two nations.
