Meta Revives Smartwatch Project, Targets 2026 Launch

Meta Platforms is preparing to launch its first smartwatch later this year, reviving the “Malibu 2” project, according to the Information, citing sources familiar with the matter. The device is expected to include health tracking features and a built-in Meta AI assistant.

The company initially explored smartwatch concepts around five years ago, including prototypes with three cameras, but shelved the effort in 2022 amid broader spending cuts in its Reality Labs unit. Meta declined to comment on the latest report.

The move reflects a wider push by tech companies to embed artificial intelligence in wearables, particularly those aimed at health and fitness. Meta’s technology has already powered AI smartglasses for Ray‑Ban owner EssilorLuxottica, which shipped nearly six million units last year, according to Smart Analytics Global.

Meta reportedly has around four augmented reality and mixed-reality glasses in development. The company is reconsidering timelines to avoid overwhelming customers with multiple new devices in quick succession. In December, employees were informed that the launch of the Phoenix mixed-reality glasses has been delayed until 2027.

Last month, Meta also paused the international rollout of its Ray-Ban Display glasses due to high demand in the United States and limited supply.

The smartwatch comeback signals Meta’s continued commitment to expanding its wearable technology portfolio while capitalising on the AI boom.
