Indonesia’s communications ministry has issued a “stern warning” to Meta Platforms Inc for failing to curb the spread of online gambling and disinformation, the ministry said on Thursday.
The warning follows an unscheduled visit on Wednesday by Communications and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid to Meta’s operational office in Jakarta.
The ministry criticised the social media giant for low compliance with Indonesian regulations addressing disinformation, online gambling, defamation and hate speech on its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
According to the ministry, Meta had taken action on only 28.47% of flagged content related to online gambling and disinformation.
“Disinformation, defamation and hate content threaten lives in Indonesia, yet Meta has allowed them to persist,” Meutya said.
The ministry urged Meta to strengthen its content moderation systems and accelerate the removal of illegal and harmful material.
It previously summoned Meta and other social media platforms last year, instructing them to improve moderation to tackle disinformation. Reuters reported that Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
