Google Rolls Out Enhanced Play Protect In Malaysia To Block Scam Apps

Google has rolled out an enhanced fraud protection feature under Google Play Protect in Malaysia, aimed at blocking scam-linked apps and curbing rising financial fraud.

The feature targets apps installed outside official platforms, automatically blocking those that request sensitive permissions such as SMS access or one-time passwords (OTPs), commonly exploited by scammers.

The rollout, supported by the National Cyber Security Agency and National Security Council, strengthens nationwide efforts to enhance digital safety.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the move aligns with the government’s “Kempen Internet Selamat”, stressing that stronger platform safeguards are critical in tackling evolving cyber threats.

Google also announced tighter controls, including mandatory developer verification and stricter checks on financial services advertisers, who must be approved by regulators such as Bank Negara Malaysia and the Securities Commission.

Separately, the tech giant will expand digital literacy efforts, including launching its “Be Scam Ready” programme in Bahasa Malaysia and scaling regional initiatives to reach over 200,000 Malaysians.
