The RM3 billion Juru-Sungai Dua Traffic Dispersal Project (PTJSD) is progressing steadily, with preliminary works for Package 1 completed and utility relocation as well as geotechnical works actively underway, according to PLUS Malaysia Bhd.
PLUS said Package 1 involves upgrading the roundabout at the East-West Interchange between KM135.15 and KM135.4, alongside the construction of a new flyover along Jalan Tun Hussein Onn between KM133.5 and KM134.5.
As of mid-April, early-stage works completed under the project included topography surveys, utility mapping, soil investigations, existing structure assessments and exploratory works.
“The achievement reflects the commitment of all parties involved in ensuring the project implementation remains on a strong footing,” PLUS said.
The highway operator said utility relocation works have reached about 55% completion through coordination with the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM), Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) and TIME dotCom Bhd.
PLUS added that geotechnical works are currently ongoing at several locations, including the installation of prefabricated vertical drains and surcharge systems, piling embankments, preliminary test piles, drainage diversion works and preparation of the Traffic Management Plan (TMP).
The PTJSD project is aimed at easing congestion along the Juru-Sungai Dua corridor, one of the busiest stretches of the North-South Expressway.
Spanning 17.3km across South Seberang Perai, Central Seberang Perai and North Seberang Perai, the project is expected to benefit around 200,000 motorists daily.
PLUS said the new direct Juru-Sungai Dua route is projected to divert about 30% of vehicles from the existing route, reducing peak-hour travel time from one hour to about 20 minutes.
