EC Says It’s Ready For All Three State Elections

The Election Commission (EC) is prepared for any potential dissolution of the state assemblies in Melaka, Johor and Negeri Sembilan as speculation grows over possible state elections.

EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said the commission has activated early preparations, including logistics coordination, polling centre updates and election worker training, to ensure smooth poll operations.

“We are also assessing election equipment requirements in the affected states,” he said.

Ramlan said the EC is simultaneously reviewing operational and logistical requirements for the 16th General Election (GE16), including procurement, workforce management and election materials.

He said election costs would depend on several factors, including the number of registered voters, polling centres, technology usage and operational needs at the time.

“The EC continues to work closely with relevant agencies, including the Ministry of Finance, to ensure all election-related procurement and operational needs are managed prudently and systematically.

“Under existing laws, the EC has 60 days from the date of dissolution to conduct an election,” he said.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had previously hinted that GE16 could be held earlier than the current parliamentary term ending in December 2027.

Ramlan stressed that the EC remains prepared for any possibility of Parliament being dissolved in accordance with the Federal Constitution and election laws.

He said preparations are being continuously strengthened, covering logistics, voter roll management, postal voting arrangements, polling centres and election materials such as ballot papers, ballot boxes and indelible ink.

Since Dec 15, 2021, the EC has implemented automatic voter registration and continuous polling station updates.

Ramlan added that the electoral roll is updated and gazetted monthly, while periodic checks are also conducted on election material stockpiles and technical equipment to ensure readiness should elections be called.
