Ferrari Bets On EV Future With US$640,000 Luce Luxury Electric Car

Ferrari NV has unveiled its first fully electric vehicle (EV), marking a major strategic shift for the iconic sports car brand as rivals pull back from aggressive EV expansion amid softer demand.

According to Reuters, the luxury automaker on May 25 introduced the four-door Luce, Italian for “light”, a €550,000 (US$640,000) five-seater developed with former Apple Inc design chief Jony Ive and his LoveFrom collective.

Chief executive Benedetto Vigna described the Luce, with deliveries scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, as the culmination of five years of development, as Ferrari seeks to broaden its appeal beyond traditional supercar buyers and attract wealthy families looking for high-performance luxury EVs.

The Luce represents a significant gamble for Ferrari at a time when competitors including Porsche AG and Automobili Lamborghini SpA have tempered EV ambitions due to weak consumer demand.

Equipped with four electric motors delivering more than 1,000hp, the Luce has a claimed top speed above 310kph and a driving range exceeding 500km.

Benedetto said the vehicle also amplifies natural vibration sounds from its electric powertrain to preserve the emotional driving feel associated with the brand’s traditional combustion-engine models.

“We are positioning the Luce to strengthen our presence in markets such as China, where EVs are widely adopted and large petrol-powered cars face heavy taxes,” he shared.

The model’s larger body, glass-heavy design and spacious interior mark a departure from Ferrari’s muscular sports car styling, while the cabin blends leather, aluminium and physical controls in contrast to the touch-centric approach used by many EV makers.
