Thunderstorms Threaten Long-Haul Journey Home As Holidaymakers Return to Klang Valley

Malaysians making the journey back to the Klang Valley after the long holiday weekend could face a wet and challenging drive, with thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds forecast across several key routes leading into the capital.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a short-term weather warning valid until noon today, covering Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, as well as parts of Perak, Pahang and Negeri Sembilan — states that sit along major north-south travel corridors.

The warning comes as thousands of motorists are expected to head home following the extended weekend break, raising the risk of slower traffic, reduced visibility and hazardous driving conditions on highways.

Areas along the North-South Expressway, particularly in Perak and Negeri Sembilan, as well as routes linking the east coast through Bentong and Raub in Pahang, could experience periods of intense rainfall and strong winds. Popular gateway towns leading into the Klang Valley may also see traffic disruptions as storms move through the region.

MetMalaysia urged motorists returning to the Klang Valley to allow extra travel time, switch on headlights during heavy rain and remain alert for flash flooding in low-lying areas, particularly during peak travel periods this morning.

The latest forecast suggests the wet weather could persist through the morning, potentially complicating what is expected to be one of the busiest return-travel periods of the long weekend.
