The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia) reported two weak earthquakes that occurred in Sabah and Sarawak on June 2, with both registering a magnitude of 2.9.
In a statement, MET Malaysia said the first earthquake struck Ranau, Sabah, at 10.36am at a depth of 10km. The epicentre was located at latitude 6.07° North and longitude 116.58° East.
Tremors from the quake were felt in several areas around Kundasang, Ranau and Kota Belud.
Later that day, at 10.33pm, another magnitude 2.9 earthquake occurred in Mambong, Sarawak, also at a depth of 10km. The epicentre was recorded at latitude 1.32° North and longitude 110.39° East.
Residents in parts of Samarahan and Serian reported feeling the tremors.
MET Malaysia said it would continue monitoring the situation and provide updates when necessary. The department stressed that the earthquakes were classified as weak and the public need not be alarmed.
