Storm Warning In Effect Across Peninsular, East Malaysia

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning for six states, with heavy rain and strong winds expected until 5pm today.

Affected areas in Peninsular Malaysia include Pahang (Bera, Pekan and Rompin), Selangor (Hulu Langat), Negeri Sembilan (Jelebu, Seremban, Kuala Pilah and Jempol) and Johor (Mersing).

In Sarawak, the warning covers Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu (Selangau), Mukah (Tanjung Manis, Daro, Matu and Dalat), Kapit and Bintulu (Tatau).

Meanwhile, in Sabah, affected areas include Pedalaman (Sipitang, Tenom, Beaufort and Tambunan), Pantai Barat (Papar, Penampang, Tuaran and Ranau), Sandakan (Telupid and Beluran) and Kudat (Pitas).

MetMalaysia said the warning is issued when there are indications of thunderstorms producing rainfall exceeding 20mm per hour that are occurring or expected to persist for more than an hour.

The department noted that thunderstorm warnings are short-term alerts valid for a period of not more than six hours from the time of issuance.
