Anwar: TVET Produces High-Skilled Talent, Boosts Economy And Strengthens Competitiveness

Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is playing a critical role in producing a highly skilled workforce, driving economic growth and enhancing Malaysia’s global competitiveness, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said, as the government moves to expand training in emerging technologies for TVET students nationwide.

He said the country can no longer be bound by outdated thinking that views success through a single educational pathway, stressing that TVET has emerged as a respected and trusted alternative capable of meeting the demands of a rapidly changing economy.

“TVET has elevated the status of skills-based education as a credible and respected choice, while producing highly skilled workers who can drive economic growth, strengthen national competitiveness and explore new opportunities in an increasingly challenging world,” he said.

On that note, Anwar announced that all government training and research institutions will be required to offer programmes in emerging fields for selected TVET students beginning in July.

He said he has instructed Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar to coordinate the initiative, which will provide early exposure to high-technology disciplines that are increasingly shaping the global economy.

“Under the programme, between 50 and 100 TVET students at each selected institution will receive specialised training in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), cryptology and energy transition.

“They will be selected to master truly new fields, namely AI, cryptology and energy transition,” Anwar added.

He noted that the growing emphasis on TVET reflects the government’s commitment to developing industry-relevant talent equipped with practical and future-ready skills needed in advanced technology sectors.

As global industries undergo rapid transformation, Anwar said skills-based education will be crucial in ensuring Malaysia remains competitive, attracts quality investments and creates a workforce capable of supporting the nation’s long-term economic ambitions.

He added that TVET is no longer viewed as a secondary option, but has become a strategic national agenda that supports innovation, employability and sustainable economic growth.
